Adjusts serious exposure commercial casualty claims requiring investigation, evaluation and negotiations.  Handles litigated files to conclusion and oversees the activities of defense counsel. \n<strong>Reports to:<\/strong> \nClaims Manager\n<strong>Responsibilities:<\/strong> \nPromptly and effectively handles to conclusion assigned claims with little to no direction and oversight which may include complex and catastrophic casualty losses.  Recommends settlement values, adheres to high standards of professional conduct consistent with the delivery of superior service.\nUtilizes various methods of settlement in those cases where warranted; assigns cases to outside vendors as warranted.\nOpens, closes and adjusts reserves within authority levels.\nMaintains current knowledge of assigned insurance lines, court decisions which impact the claims function and policy changes and modifications.\nServes as a mentor to less experienced claims associates and assists with training\/presentations as assigned by claims management.\nOversees defense counsel in all lawsuit activities from inception throughout the life of the claim, including subrogation activities.\nField travel required with use of company car when needed.  Approximate travel = 25%.   Travel includes the states of Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.\n<strong>Job Requirements: <\/strong> \nEducation: College degree preferred.\n<strong>Licenses\/Designations: <\/strong> \nIndiana license required, and can be obtained upon acceptance of the position.  Professional development such as CPCU, INS, AIC preferred.\n<strong>Experience:<\/strong> \nMinimum 3-5 years of commercial casualty experience, including commercial policy knowledge.  Advanced knowledge of insurance theory and practices, insurance contracts and their application.  Excellent customer focus and proven ability to proactively meet customer needs.  Analytical skills necessary to make decisions and resolve conflict in application of coverage, laws of jurisdiction to investigation facts, policy exclusions and exceptions.  Proven organizational skills to effectively prioritize increased and more complex workloads.  Demonstrates strong but flexible standards and can be seen as balanced based on the conflicting demands of the position.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively communicate and\/or negotiate with various audiences.\n<strong>Job Conditions:<\/strong> \nThis is mostly an inside position with occasional travel as required based on the claim at hand.  May require ability to sit and use telephone and personal computer for extended periods of time.  Representatives may be required to operate an automobile and have a valid driver\u2019s license with a safe driving record.  Must be able to make physical inspections of accident scenes.  Must be willing to work irregular hours and to travel with possible overnight requirements. The desired candidate must have a minimum of three years of commercial lines underwriting experience.\n\n<strong>Job Summary:<\/strong> \nAccepts, retains and prices small to moderate exposure for renewal and endorsement commercial business polices based on granted authority. Provides other underwriting technical support with moderate direction. Works within broad limits of authority on underwriting assignments of high technical complexity. Provides guidance and assistance to lower level underwriters and other functional areas.\n<strong>Reporting Relationships:<\/strong> \nReports to Underwriting Manager; no direct reports.\n<strong>Core Job Duties & Responsibilities:<\/strong> \nGathers information from multiple sources to perform underwriting analysis. May require gathering verbal information or data through reports or other electronic means.\nReviews individual risks for acceptability and handles those within authority based on company underwriting guidelines and standards.\nManages workflow and intricacies of underwriting heavy volume of assigned work, utilizing company tools and systems. Ensures file handling quality and workflow efficiency. May manage larger, more complex work that requires working with and through others to meet overall project timelines and maximize workflow. May assist in managing work inventories within the unit.\nUnderwrites renewals and endorsements. Decisions at this level may require review of additional variables, leveraging agency relationships, inspection reports and evaluation of exceptions. Reviews for acceptability and handles those within authority using company underwriting guidelines and standards.\nPlans completion of assignments to meet agreed upon timelines and service level agreements.\nCommunicates with agents and other internal and external business partners by requesting and providing requested information.\nStrengthens agency relationships through regular contact on underwriting matters, promoting profit and new business growth, renewal retention and service capabilities. May participate in the review and analysis of agency performance.\nResponds to request from agents and underwriting staff with resolution within established time and service standards to facilitate and expedite service needs. Routes calls and higher-level issues to appropriate individuals. May handle escalated customer service issues.\nEducates internal and external partners on underwriting process, practice and tools. Helps train less experienced underwriting staff. May participate in training development or delivery as a subject matter expert.\nPerforms other related duties as assigned.\n\n<strong>MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:<\/strong>\n<strong>Education:<\/strong> \nBachelor\u2019s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.\n<strong>License\/Certification\/Designation:<\/strong> \nCompletion of INS, AU or similar designations with progress toward CIC and\/or CPCU is preferred.\n<strong>Experience:<\/strong> \nMinimum of three years of commercial lines underwriting experience.\n<strong>Knowledge: <\/strong>\nCommercial underwriting policy, practices and procedures. Rating plans and plan concepts. State and Federal insurance laws and regulations. Commercial insurance processing systems.\n<strong>Skills\/Competencies: <\/strong>\nVerbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with all levels of internal and external contacts. Ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to work-related problems. Ability to analyze insurance risks to determine the degree of acceptability and pricing. Effective time management skills and competencies preferred. Ability to operate PC and related software. Ability to advise agents and agency staff on commercial contracts, procedures and business practices.\n\n<strong>JOB CONDITIONS: <\/strong>\nOvertime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)\nWorking Conditions: Normal office environment.
